SUMMARY:Cine Concert
DESCRIPTION:\nCiné-Concert 2023\nThe silent film era of the 1900s and 1930
s is long forgotten. Some classics failed to withstand the test of time\,
while others lay ‘dormant’ in film archives around the world. \n\nDat
 e: 24th November\n\nTime: 6:30 pm\n\nThe Ciné-Concert is a show that comb
ines the love for cinema with that of live music. Films shown on a giant s
creen are accompanied by musicians playing original compositions live on s
tage. It is a means of resuscitating silent film repertoires and inviting
audiences to discover or rediscover cinematic classics\, through a differe
nt lens.\n\nMusicians Robert Piéchaud (pianist) and Stan de Nussac (multi
-instrumentalist) put forth a proposal to deliver a series of concerts in
India\, with the support of the French Institute in India (IFI)\, the netw
ork of Alliances Françaises in India (AF India)\, Film Preservation Assoc
iates (FPA) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI).\n\nThe silent f
ilms to be showcased include a varied selection of films by Dadasaheb Phal
ke\, Baburao Painter\, Georges Méliès\, Alice Guy and Kranti Kanadé\n\n
Concert duration: 1h30\n\nMusicians: Robert Piéchaud [Pianist] and Stan d
 e Nussac [Saxophonist]\n\nFREE EVENT | OPEN TO ALL\n\nMusicians \n\nRober
 t Piéchaud \n\nClaude Helffer’s student of the piano\, Gilles Harlé o
n the organ and Charles Bornstein in orchestration\, Robert Piéchaud perf
orms regularly in recitals and often includes his own compositions. Robert
Piéchaud writes mainly for chamber training\, for voice and piano. Passi
onate about silent cinema (including Keaton\, Chaplin\, Linder\, Mizoguchi
or Ozu)\, he performs in film concerts at the Louvre Auditorium (every ye
ar since 2014)\, at the Cinémathèque Française\, at the Collège des Be
rnardins\, etc.  With the mezzo-soprano Jill McCoy and Stanislas de Nuss
ac\, Robert Piéchaud founded the Trio Trans-Atlantismes in 2011. Research
er at the IRCAM\, he participated in Bass Holograms (a project by artist F
loy Krouchi) in Pune\, during his stay in India (January 2020) which\, gav
e him the opportunity for a decisive encounter with Hindustani music.\n\nA
mong his recent creations or performances: are the string septet Métamorp
hoses on a theme by W.  Rihm (commissioned by Radio France 2018)\, the w
ind quintet The River (2016\, Reykjavik)\, Aelita (Auditorium du Louvr
 e\, 2015)\, Still (Collège des Bernardins\, 2013)\, The Bagdad Zoo (201
 2) and Shiloh (2011)\, numerous studies for piano (including Snow Flurr
ies\, 2011). The 2016 Paris Autumn Festival dedicated a monographic concer
t to him entitled Amerika\, where his Wittgenstein-Lieder were created\,
for voice and ensemble\, as well as his transcription for wind quintet an
d jazz sax of Charles  Ives’ Variations on America.\n\nStan de Nussac
\n\nA multi-instrumentalist\, Stan de Nussac holds a 1st prize for excelle
nce in jazz saxophone and a State jazz diploma\, as well as a Masters in e
thnomusicology on P’ansori (traditional Korean song) at the Sorbonne. He
is also an aikido teacher and a shiatsu practitioner. Stan has collaborat
ed on several occasions with Maurice Béjart: for the ballet Opera (1993
) as a saxophonist improvising on stage among the dancers. He has compose
d for Sylvie Guillem in the ballet Sissi\, Impératrice anarchiste and
more recently Tchékhov au bois dormant (2006) for the Béjart school i
n Lausanne. As for theatre\, he composed for Laura Forti’s play Nema Pro
blema (2012)\, directed by Alain Batis\, and performed on stage the role o
f the saxophonist musician (Épée de bois\, Vincennes). For silent cinema
\, Stan collaborates with Robert Piéchaud in film concerts (Mizoguchi\, O
zu\, Keaton…) notably at the Louvre Auditorium or at the Cinémathèque
Française.\n\nThe Piéchaud-Nussac duo \n\nRobert Piéchaud and Stan de
Nussac\, natives of Paris\, have known each other since the early days of
childhood. As adults they eventually end up\, each having followed a very
different course: Robert on the classical and contemporary side\, Stan in
jazz. It is however only later that they found the opportunity to collabor
ate\, with the creation (2010) of the Trio Trans-Atlantismes(with Jill Ale
ssandra McCoy in voice)  where they experimented with forms halfway betwe
en strict writing and improvisation\, an adventure that would eventually l
ead them to the Bouffes du Nord scene (Festival d’Automne à Paris 2016)
.\n\nBut it is mainly thanks to the cine-concert that\, for the past ten y
ears\, they have invented a common language\, Robert on the piano and Stan
on wind instruments (saxophones\, bass clarinet\, flute)  between jazz a
nd contemporary music\, through improvisation\, between East and West\, in
film repertoires as varied as Buster Keaton\, Charlie Chaplin\, Mizoguchi
or Ozu and in prestigious places like  the Auditorium du Louvre or the C
 inémathèque Française.
