In 1999, the works for the installation of an optical fiber cable have crossed Cambodia. This information highway should join the one that, following the Silk Road, is connecting Europe to China. It will thus be one of the many crossroads for Internet and telecommunication networks from which we often perceive only the virtual side.
Those works involve the excavation of a one meter deep trench from the Thai r to the Vietnamese border, to bury the cable barely bigger than a thumb. This is the opportunity for many Cambodians – poor farmers, demobilized soldiers, destitute families – to find work. The trench goes trough mines and the haunting presence of millions of dead people whose souls “wander”, harassing survivors, in the absence of proper graves. Throughout this digging with a pick, a hoe or hands, the film shows the fear of continuing to work while undergoing daily economic violence.
