John Gilbert began his journey in India almost two decades ago, of which the last seven he has resided in Mysore and Goa. During this time he has lived many lives: as traveller, business man, yoga practitioner, and artist. Gilbert’s show, Pop India, is a celebration and exploration of the India Gilbert has encountered, reflected on, and reacted to. Gilbert’s show is a play on three of the most recognizable words in India: Prem, Guru and Yoga. These icons, in the form of words, are boldly painted using vibrant pallets in acrylic or enamel on canvas. Influenced by Gilbert’s current home in Karnataka, the icons have also been created in the typical Mysore and Tanjore style using gold-foil and Jaipur stones. The paintings are complemented by striking Prem, Guru and Yoga sculptures made in teak and stone. Various multi-media pieces will also be on display, where Gilbert aggressively layers paint on canvas, which he often pairs with a phrase or word creating an intimate dialogue between viewer and piece.
As a Pop-inspired creator, he loves to bring art to the people. He says of his work and vision, “I love to see art leave the gallery and the museum; to blur the lines. One of my dreams is to see my art on the walls of the city, in civic sculpture — in dialog with Indian culture”.
