About the Play
A stirring theatrical performance that bridges the past and present, personal grief and political awakening.
In Behind the Veil… The Era of Mahsa, we follow the introspective journey of a history and geography teacher in Iran, quietly navigating life in the shadow of personal loss and political unrest. Having distanced himself from both the 1979 revolution and the more recent waves of resistance, he believes he knows the harsh realities of a regime that systematically suppresses women’s freedoms.
But when a powerful new uprising breaks out — echoing with the cry of “Woman, Life, Freedom” — he is shaken to his core. As unveiled women take to the streets in bold defiance, their courage compels him to confront his fears and reflect on a forgotten past.
Haunted by the memory of his wife and inspired by the historic figure of Tahereh – Qorrat ol Ein, a pioneering poetess and activist who once tore off her veil before an assembly of men – the professor embarks on a profound inner journey. It’s a quest to understand resistance, reclaim forgotten narratives, and redefine his own identity in the face of history.
