Captain Achab is a Franco-Swedish movie based on Herman Melville’s masterpiece novel Moby Dick. Director, Philippe Ramos gives us a unique and personal adaptation of this story, inspired by the Gustave Courbet painting: ‘The Origin of the World’. Set in 1840, in a lush oceanic world and filmed in Northern
France the film slowly reveals the trajectory of a young Biblereading boy in an isolated hunting hut who becomes the most famous whaling captain in the world (and, indeed literature). Young Achab grows to literally rule the oceans. A highly respected captain, he meets his match in the prodigious whale, Moby Dick; whose whiteness is reflected in translucent skin of the beautiful Louise who also haunts his dreams…
