Hiroshima mon amour is one of the all-time greatest French films. Directed by the extraordinary Alain Resnais with a screenplay by Marguerite Duras, the film is often referred to as the starting point of the Nouvelle Vague movement in cinema. Set in post-war Hiroshima, it relates the story of a French woman and a Japanese man (referred to simply as ‘She’ and ‘He’) who meet and have a brief affair. Their short time together, juxtaposed against the landscape of devastation and loss, intertwines narratives of trauma and memory. Resnais’s use of miniature flashbacks evoked a uniquely nonlinear storyline literally rewriting the rules of film-making.
This film will be screened in conjunction with the Flashpoint Human Rights Film Festival.
