With Vengo, Tony Gatlif has made a flamenco film. Hopefully he avoids all the traps of a “tourism cinema”. The popular Andalusian music is here never ornamental. It is one of the main characters and the only star of the impressive expository scene, before the start of fiction. It is also the antique chorus of a southern tragedy, as simple and archetypal as an opera libretto.
So this is the story of an impossible mourning, of honor and vengeance. Caco the Andalusian, is lamenting over his dead daughter Pepa during the musical festivities, accompanied by his young nephew Diego, a young exuberant handicapped person. During these hot nights, mixing dancers, widows always praying and half-Mafioso, it appears that the Caco family is in a blood debt to the rival clan, the Caravaca, and that someone must pay…
