Home away from Home (Le geste juste), an installation by Mario D’Souza

On view: 13th – 18th March  | Time: 11:00 am – 7:00 pm | Alliance Française de Delhi

For over two decades, Mario D’Souza has explored what it means to belong between cultures. An Indo-French artist, his work reflects a life lived across geographies, where “home” is not a fixed place, but a space continuously recreated through memory, gesture, craftsmanship, and human connection.

Through symbolic forms such as hands and chairs, along with rich colours and textured materials, the exhibition opens a dialogue on identity, migration, voice, and coexistence. Personal stories unfold into shared experiences, inviting viewers to reflect on their own journeys of belonging.

Mario D’Souza has been living in France since 2001. Born in 1973 in Bangalore (India), he studied at the MSU School of Baroda (State of Gujarat), and later at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. His work has received support from the Institut français, the Centre national des arts plastiques, as well as the DRAC and the Regional Council of the Centre region.

Through his immersive installations, Mario D’Souza transforms space with objects and drawings, creating a sensory universe where past, present, and future intertwine — a reflection of his inner exiles.

In recent years, his works have been presented in solo exhibitions in France and India, notably at the Chapelle Saint-Jacques, Fondation Martel, Château d’Oiron, Mobilier National, Nuit Blanche, and Alliance Française de New Delhi. Mario D’Souza has also participated in several group exhibitions in France (MAC/VAL, Triennale de Vendôme, Salon de Montrouge, Espace Fondation EDF), in the United States (MASS-MoCA, USA), and in India (Sakshi Gallery, Delhi).
