Basing his film on a novel by Donald Westlake, Costa-Gavras feeds the moral questioning of the book by a kind of fantastic subversion, distilled watermarked. Indeed, the murders are not bloody. Nevertheless, ordinary reality is threatened with an obscure tearing, undermined by wrong notes. The main success of this film is to show in a very significant way, murder after murder, the alienation of a man surrounded by a society of “winners” and who let himself be guided by his irrational fear with a disarming ingenuousness.
