A funky, rocking Parisian electro-jazz five-piece dance band about whom Le Monde, one of the most famous of the city of light’s daily papers, questioned; “Is NoJazz the future of Jazz?” Indeed this group is set to re-define the genre with its syncopated, danceable rhythms, words, modalities and melodies from around the world. It all began in 2000, with the meeting of five musicians ready for anything, proud of their multiple respective experiences but determined to explore new musical territories.
Philippe Balatier, aka Balat, keyboardist and sample, fan of James Brown and of the Propellerheads, and composer of ad soundtracks. Virtuoso jazz trumpeter Sylvain Gontard, aka SilverSly, who joined the group in June of 2008. Pascal Reva, aka Bilbo, bassist and drummer, Philippe Sellam, aka Slam, saxophonist who’s played everything from free to big band, and has accompanied the likes of Gil Evans, Paco Sery, Roy Hargrove, and last but not least the guest star HKB Finn, talented spoken word artist and singer from London who embodies all the worldly influences that are present in that cosmopolitan city.
The band’s concept is very simple: to mix the original celebratory spirit of jazz with hypnotic rhythms and contemporary sounds. Acoustic and Jungle, Trip Hop and Fanfares, melodies and samples, funk and jazz happily mingle with drum and bass. They have performed in about 40 countries so far, appearing at clubs and festivals. Their shows are explosive, fantastic displays of energy and rhythm where the magic of George Clinton, Frank Zappa and Miles Davis fuse to create an otherworldly experience.
NoJazz have released 3 albums on Warner Brothers internationally (with many guests, including Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire…). Their newest, fourth album “Zooland” came out in December 2009.
