Alliance Francaise de Delhi in association with the French Embassy in India and Smile Foundation presents the special screening of I am Kalam.
I am Kalam is a film that depicts the story of a child, his struggles to pursue his dreams and his efforts to surpass the boundaries of reality. Inspired by the former Indian President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the film focuses on child labour and its exploitative structure in India and advocates the need to provide education to the underclass and to equalize social inequalities. All this and more, packaged in the beautiful environs of the picturesque Rajasthan, its vibrant colours and soulful music.
Despite being a film focusing on the grave issue of child labour that has been looming large in India for decades now, I am Kalam is not preachy and boring in its aesthetic treatment. It has a simple and contemporary narrative style and does not follow the clichéd way of pitting the protagonist against a slave driver. Instead, the story draws its strength from the protagonist’s relationships with every character in the film for e.g. his love for Bhati – the food joint owner, friendship with Rannvijay – the local prince his age, dislike for Laptan – the Bollywood obsessed co-worker at the food joint and respect for Lucie Madame – the French tourist.
I am Kalam is certainly a treat for all who look forward to entertaining yet meaningful cinema.
