‘Les stances a sophie’, is a tour – de- force post – Nouvelle Vague/ French new wave film that has amazingly been lost to the world for nearly forty years. It features the soundtrack by the Art Ensemble of Chicago driven by a narrative full of the post/1968 ideals of Paris radicalism, hip dialogue- sharp clothes and fast cars.
Celine is a free – spirited, sexually liberated woman who embarks upon a relationship with the bourgeois philippe that is doomed from the start. Celine struggles to live with her newly found confines, before reasserting her freedom through writing (a text on ‘female sexuality’), art and love affairs. A car crash starts and ends this prophetic film, which was made in Paris in 1970. An excellent cast by Bernadette Lafonte (as Celine) and Michel Duchaussay (as Philippe) seamlessly weave the theme of sexuality, Art, Truth, Love and Music throughout the Film. With the stunning soundtrack by the Art Ensemble of Chicago (who also make an appearance in the film), a superb sophisticated narrative based on the powerful, feminist novel by Christiane Rochefort (who also co-wrote the script) and Moshe Mizrahi’s excellent direction – with all the energy of the youthful French new wave movement – makes this film an instant essential addition to French Cinema.
