About the Film
Haytarma (Crimean Tatar: Qaytarma — meaning “return” or “homecoming”) is a poignant Ukrainian period drama directed by Akhtem Seitablaiev, a filmmaker of Crimean Tatar origin. The film was Ukraine’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 86th Academy Awards.
Set against the backdrop of 18 May 1944, one of the darkest chapters in Crimean Tatar history, the story follows Amet-Khan Sultan, a twice-decorated Hero of the Soviet Union. During a brief visit to his hometown of Alupka, Sultan finds himself a witness to the brutal Stalin-ordered deportation of the entire Crimean Tatar population.
Haytarma is a powerful exploration of memory, identity, and resilience, shedding light on a deeply significant yet often overlooked historical event.
