The course will help you:

  1. Discover European art history
  2. Increase visual literacy with discussion on celebrated masterpieces
  3. Distinguish between the main styles and movements (Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism, Surrealism, Pop Art etc)
  4. Analyse subject matter, composition, colour, iconography among other elements in a painting
  5. Develop vocabulary to talk about art & artists in French
  6. Grow confident in discussing art & shape your independent opinion about art

What this course is about:

With key masterpieces and their makers as examples, you will learn to analyse art and identify eras and their signature styles, the message included or sometimes concealed, and what sets some of them apart from the rest. You will gain the confidence and competence to talk about art and spark up any room you find yourself in!

Introduction to Art Appreciation (2 hours)

Human beings inherently question, reason, like or dislike — to varying degrees — every object and experience in life. Our interaction with art in paintings, architecture, gastronomy, cartoons, cinema or video games reveals a story that defines us as an individual and as a socio-cultural being. View art with a fresh perspective while parallelly developing an understanding for its latent nuances. Come, transform it into something breathtakingly powerful.

 Module I: Pre-Modern Era (2 hours)

From Prehistoric Art to Romanticism

Explore the evolution of art from the prehistoric period to Romanticism, tracing the motivations of philanthropy, propaganda, passion, and advertising. This module uncovers the narratives behind cave paintings, classical sculptures, and romantic canvases, revealing the historical contexts and emotional depths that define these works. Module II: Modern Era (2 hours)

From Impressionism to Pop Art

Journey through the groundbreaking transformations of the Modern Era, from Impressionism to Pop Art. Gain insights into iconic artists like Van Gogh, Picasso, Pollock and Warhol, whose works challenged conventions and redefined artistic expression. This module offers participants the tools to decode artistic techniques, themes, and innovations that shaped the modern artistic landscape.

Module III: Contemporary Applications of Art (2 hours)

Discover how art continues to evolve in the 21st century, encompassing conceptual art, installations, and street art. This module examines contemporary architecture and multidisciplinary art forms, highlighting their relevance in today’s world. Participants will explore how art intersects with technology and everyday life, creating new dimensions of interaction and appreciation.

Module IV: Appropriating Modern & Contemporary Art today (2 hours)

Conclude the course with a visit to the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, where theoretical knowledge meets real-world application. This immersive experience allows participants to engage directly with modern and contemporary artworks, fostering a deeper appreciation for art in its natural setting. Gain firsthand insights into the artistic process and its cultural significance.
