If I Could Tell You: An Indian film directed by Niharika Popli.

Date: 14th June | Time: 6 pm | Venue: Alliance Francaise de Delhi

Synopsis: Charu, a Deaf woman, and her hearing friend Surbhi, a child of Deaf adults (CODA), have distinct relationships with Indian Sign Language (ISL)—Surbhi learned ISL before any spoken language, while Charu learned it later in life. Empowered by ISL, Charu strives to build a community of independent, empowered Deaf women in India through her feminist forum, “Deaf Women Too,” aiming to reshape societal perspectives for inclusivity. Surbhi, an interpreter bridging the Deaf and hearing worlds, is now exploring her own identity beyond caregiving. The documentary “If I Could Tell You,” created with artist Pakhi Sen, broadens the discussion on language’s role in human experience, featuring performances and interviews with diverse artists and showcasing India’s first original ISL poem by a Deaf poet, blending animation and artistic performances to push storytelling boundaries.

Duration: One hour nine minutes followed by Q&A with the Director

The event will be accessible to the Deaf audience through an interpreter.
